VOUNARIA

Beginning with our small itinerary at the 44 km of the highway of Kalamata – Koroni we meet the sublime village of Vounaria, built upon the ruins of the ancient location of Kolonidon and within an arced sequence of sparse verdurous hillocks with the series curve pointing to the South.

From these hillocks…Vounalakia with the highest of them is being Ai-Lias and Goula on the eastern side wherefrom its name is derived.

What makes Vounaria village a particular attraction is its traditional color.

Almost all the village's houses are built with mud-bricks with a balcony and a roof with tiles. However, what makes the village excel and brightens its presence is the Holy Church of Evangelistria, which is entirely built with stones in the Byzantine rhythm of the previous century.

Vounaria have been actively involved in the struggles of the Nation. The people of the village become renown with regard to the popular art that they developed and especially with reference to pottery. The village today has 226 inhabitants. It would be an omission if it is not mentioned that the poet Giannis Kamvyssis was a native of Vounaria.

KOMBI

Continuing our small itinerary, and after Vounaria, we meet the village of Kombi. The village's name is associated with the fact that its people prepared ropes with knots (i.e. kombi means knots in modern Greek) and rope-ladders for the assault against the Turkish occupation of Koroni's Castle.

The narrow rural road that crosses the naive village with the 114 inhabitants is kept safe like a secret jewel amidst a string of olive groves and vineyards that lead to the masterpiece of nature, its idyllic sand beach.

Kombi, with its magnificent natural view how could it be possible to stay out of the tide of the tide of the new 'conquerors', the tourist creatures. And the small village is rapidly developing with structures, dispersed here and there, which are successively adapted to the natural ambient. We hope that this development will continue properly, and within this framework of respect to the natural and traditional environment, so that the wave would not turn into a stream that can wash away everything.

CHAROKOPIO

After Kombi and within a small distance w e encounter the large village of Charakopio . The expression of one's eyes while accessing the Central Square makes the visitor wonder. The villagers are mainly occupied in agricultural productions, whereas the shops, cafes, the adobe-built houses and the mansions yield an aura of the past as well as of a vivid present.

Charakopio was settled throughout Greek history as it is evidenced by the Mycenaean tombs, other archeological findings and the marvelous Roman mosaic of Villa in the Aghia Triada location.

Around 1860 the village was the flourishing crossroads of the Pylos – Methoni - Koroni route with Manufacturing and trading establishments, with special emphasis placed on its renown kilns where earthenware jars, tzares and adobes were made. Unfortunately, during the recent years, this ever floating traditional verve was gone thus erasing the old image of the village. Today, the village's population, along with the settlements of Aghios Isidoros, Potamia, Aghia Triada, Armeni, Katinades and Gargarou numbers 949 inhabitants.

VASILITSI

The Akritiki stretch of land is rooted 27 km of enviable and miscellaneous beaches with sand , little pebbles or caves. From the mountain to the sea and from Goules to Akritas with panoramic surprises are at the same time a riddle of history.

Accounts of historians have reached us, which intermingle with modern narrations, however the ruins at the church of Faneromeni cannot tell, or even inform us, whether the Assini was established here.

Vasilitsi with its traditional stone-built houses, situated at the heart of the village, or in the settlements of Faneromeni and Livadakia counts 640 residents, descendants of the Arcades, who emigrated here many generations ago. They are mainly occupied with the production of oil and of excellent quality.

CHRYSOKELLARIA

Following the Vasilitsi village we encounter the Chrysokellaria village. Saratsas, the older name of Chrysokellaria was inhabited already from the Middle Ages. Up above in the mountain Zarnaoura, the today's peaceful village, with it 612 residents is spread on both sides, along its slopes.

From one side, the olive plantations, manors and the mountain, are the eternal spectators of the Messinian gulf and on the other, through a splendid landscape lead us to the Tsapi sand beach where the reality transformed into vision.

During the Venetian era, the village's sources were supplying with advisable way the Koroni's water-tower.

The village's involvement in the 1821 War of Independence is unforgettable, that is the holocaust of the Chrysokellaria's young lads, who were tossed before the Koroni's walls.

Today, the village's residents, being descendants of heroes and emigrants from Arcadia, further than the agricultural production are involved into firming up the traditional hospitality of the place and the walker-visitor will be ever sure that a door will be opened for him.

IAMEIA

A little further on is situated the village of Iameia with 136 residents. Here, also, the old des c endants of the people from Arcadia are occupied with the cultivation of olive trees, raisin and stock-raising.

The name of the village is ancient, recently however the discovery of Mycenean tombs as well as of other findings at the Vigla location in Kaplani, may announce the explanation and the solution of the mystery of ancient Iameia, which may be found in the area.

AKRITOCHORI

Continuing our small itinerary, and after Vasilitsi, we encounter the village of Akritochori.

Akritochori in former times was called Crizi; nevertheless, it maintained its smiling traditional features, its square, the giant grown vineyards and plane trees and nests into the open wings upon Mavrovouni, which counts 303 residents only. The village was also effective since it is associated with the pride of the 1821 struggles of the nation having offered to the country a number of fighters and heroes.

FALANTHI

Falanthi with two settlements, Chomatero and the small Mystraki is a tractive power of 352 inhabitants. Emigrants from Arcadia, following the emancipation from the Turkish yoke, settled here and with ardor and diligence they fecundated the geophysical opulence and prospered through the cultivation of raisin and greenhouses.

In Mystraki, traditional stone-built settlements muse in the panoramic view and recount the glory and the legends of the past.

And by the small torrent of Falanthi, the small church of Aghia Pelagia by its shady planes and water sources narrates its history while in Chomatero, Nature, History and Religion embodied within the monastic ravine the Byzantine Monastery of Ag. Theodori, which flourished in the past and still shines.

KAPLANI

At a distance of 12 km from Koroni, is situated the Kaplani village, up in the Zarnaoura mountain, which together with Zizani, Galeika (the today's Exochiko) count 297 residents.

In Paleokastro, the dominating location towards the sea and the ruins of walls from the middle ages along with the non yet exposed Mycenenan tombs, associate the "guild" of the castles of Koroni and Methoni whereas they could altogether wake up the legend that these two castles were connected together.
